When black mold, or strachybotrys, has invaded your home, your first thought is how to get rid of it, and your second thought is how much will mold removal cost? The question of cost has many considerations. For example, how big is the infected area, in what part of the house is it, is it airborne and has it already caused structural damage? Also, different mold removal companies charge different prices, so you need to get estimates to be sure you are not spending more than you need to.
This type of problem needs very professional attention. It is not easy to remove mold permanently and also without infecting other areas. You need someone who has the proper equipment and training to do it right the first time. This may not come from the cheapest bid, so take some time to understand what each company is offering.
You can save a lot on your mold removal cost if you do it yourself; however, there are some cautions for this. The infestation should be small and away from ventilation. This is so when you disturb it for removal, small spores don’t fly into a ventilation system or out the door into another room ready to start another infestation. You will need protective clothing and goggles as well as a mask for safe breathing.
The mold removal cost may be more than just the clean-up. There are other costs you may not realize at first. There could be health costs to you or your family if the mold is a large infestation and has been there, unknown, for a long time. You may have the added cost of having to move out for the time it takes a professional to clean the problem. Also, your home could lose value once mold has been discovered, even if you have it carefully and safely removed by a professional. If it is professionally cleaned it may be fine, but in some states you need to disclose the issue when you want to sell the house.
Toxic black mold needs a very wet environment to grow. You may think that by drying the area and using chlorine bleach or vinegar you can kill the mold. While they may work on the surface, they do not work deeper, below the surface where the mold hides and will continue to grow. There are also products on the market to kill mold, and the best ones are eco-friendly and harmless to your lungs. Even if you end up doing the clean-up yourself, get a professional opinion in the beginning. It is worth the extra mold removal cost, if they charge a fee, because this is one problem you do not want to leave to chance.
